How to handle consulting interviews’ fear factor
Most candidates find interviewing with top management consulting firms intimidating – these are prestigious institutions known for their ruthless selection process and incredibly high competition to enter.
It can become a problem when top candidates are so intimidated that their fear affects their interview performance. To alleviate fear we encourage our candidates:
- to practice interviews to build confidence,
- to meet as many current consultants ahead of interviews to reduce the intimidation factor,
- to pretend not to be afraid.
Pretending not to be afraid is a surprisingly efficient strategy!
A good watch on this topic is a Ted talk “Your body language shapes who you are”, from Amy Cuddy, professor and researcher at Harvard Business School, describing how positive body posture can help build up confidence.
We also encourage reading Theodore Roosevelt’s Autobiography, which describes how he ceased to be afraid of many things by acting as if he was not afraid: “There were all kinds of things I was afraid of at first, ranging from grizzly bears to ‘mean’ horses and gun-fighters; but by acting as if I was not afraid I gradually ceased to be afraid.” Theodore Roosevelt- An Autobiography – 1913, The Vigor of Life.
